A short introduction
Logo TraFaDy

Who are we? TraFaDy is a network based on COST Action 21143 and aims to deepen the knowledge of the growing, rapidly changing phenomenon and dynamics of transnational families (TNF). We bring together researchers and stakeholders from different countries and disciplines to address the need for transnational insights and to formulate policy- and practice-oriented recommendations with an impact on international, national, sub-local and local practices.

TraFaDy is structured into four thematic working groups (WGs), which address critical areas of increasing importance in research, practice and policy. In addition, two horizontal working groups drive methodological progress and consolidate the recommendations of the other WGs into recommendations for stakeholders and policymakers.

Two general meetings and several Working Group meetings
Two general meetings and several Working Group meetings
We have had two General Meetings in 2023, one in Durres (Albania) in February and one in Istanbul (Turkey) in November. During these meetings, the main goals of our Action, further development of ongoing initiatives within the working groups and planning of new initiatives from the Action were discussed. All six Working Groups had several meetings, online and in person. Several sub-groups were formed, bringing together members with similar interests.
1st International Summer School
The first TraFaDy summer school took place in Brussels (Belgium) in June 2023. Social work students, professionals, practitioners from social work and welfare organisations and researchers in the field of transnational families were invited to a full program with internationally acknowledged lecturers, experienced guest speakers, interactive workshops and off-campus excursions.

Expert meetings on transnational family dynamics and health and wellbeing
In September and October 2023, TraFaDy members met in Vienna at the ‘Center for Health and Migration’ to discuss aspects related to the health and well-being of transnational families, with a focus on undocumented migrants. The main goal of the meeting was to start a conversation to develop future guidelines for policy. Different (transnational) family concepts between the state, health and social care providers and migrants were discussed. A report will soon be published on our website.
Expert meeting on the impact of current and future European migration policies on transnational families
On 30 October 2023, TraFaDy gathered a group of experts to analyse the current proposals for the new EU Migration and Asylum pact and discuss the potential impact on transnational families. The workshop was held in a hybrid format at the office of the Association of German Family Organisations in Berlin and included both TraFaDy as well as external experts. The report of the meeting summarising the inputs, discussions and findings has now been published can be downloaded here.

2nd TraFaDy Summer school: Transnational childhoods
From 24 June to 3 July, TraFaDy is organising a second summer school in Brussels (Belgium). The main topic of this year: Transnational childhoods in Europe. The summer school focuses on the impact of living in a transnational family on children. The programme consists of a mix of lectures, interactive workshops in small groups and field visits to organisations working with transnational families.   We promote exchange between students, researchers and stakeholders from different countries, disciplines and career stages; and offer a limited number of grants for TraFaDy members. Find out more on this training school on our website or via summerschool@trafady.eu.

13-14 May 2024: Joint meeting with IMISCOE’s Standing Committee on Migrant Transnationalism
In this co-organised with IMISCOE’s Standing Committee on Migrant Transnationalism (MITRA) 2-day meeting in Cluj-Napoca, Romania), the participants aim to link theoretical findings to political developments and formulate arguments and proposals for them. Researchers and policy makers are invited to present their research and current political debates and to reflect on those. Secondly, there will be a PhD-training that focuses on translating research findings into policy. One important corner stone should be the challenges of middle and eastern European states to be at the same time sending and receiving countries. We are looking forward for your applications!

Several meetings of Working Groups and General Meeting in Vilnius
All Working Groups continue their work throughout 2024 by meeting several times, online and in-person. We will increasingly have joint meetings of Working Groups to strengthen the collaboration and use synergies. In November 2024, the next General Meeting will take in Vilnius, Lithuania. The meeting will be hosted by the Institute of Educational Sciences and Social Work at Mykolas Romeris University. All Working Groups will have the chance to have intense discussions. Additionally, there will be meetings of the Core Group and the Management Comittee.
